I’m Alex and this is my blag.
I live in Sheffield, UK.
I’m work full time exploring algorithmic patterns, as part of a four-year UKRI-funded “future leaders fellowship” with Then Try This.
I made the TidalCycles live coding environment.
I’m involved with Sheffield Pattern Club.
Since 2000 I have performed algorithmic and live coded music widely (list of events here), e.g. performing solo as Yaxu. and as part of CCAI, part of slub, half of Canute and half of Epiploke. I also work with Kate Sicchio on the code+dance project Sound Choreographer <> Body Code and have sometimes improvised with such good folks as xname and Leafcutter John.
My solo Peak Cut EP was released on Computer Club in 2015. I’ve been working on my album since forever.
I co-founded and (when there isn’t a pandemic on) co-organise the AlgoMech festival of Algorithmic and Mechancial Movement.
I’m co-founder of algorithmic dance music promoters algorave, software art repository runme and on-line forum lurk. I’m also co-founder of TOPLAP (a temporary organisation for the promotion of live algorithm programming), and have in the past co-founded dorkbotsheffield, and latterly dorkbotlondon.
I completed my PhD thesis “Artist Programmers and Programming Languages for the Arts” in late 2011, supervised by Geraint Wiggins within the ISMS group in Goldsmiths, University of London.
I’m a volunteer with Access Space, a charity working in the area of free digital culture in Sheffield.
You can see more of what I’m up to on my list of projects, and list of events.
